Mazamet - La Ville

Mazamet is one of the top 100 most beautiful places to visit in France.

Mazamet, un des 100 Plus Beaux Détours de FranceMazamet is situated at the crossroads of the paths leading to the Atlantic and Mediterranean; close to the Parc Régional du Haut Languedoc and is at the foot of the Montagne Noire.

The calm of its floral streets surrounded by its forests and lakes is refreshing. Amongst many popular activities, you will be able to appreciate the area on foot or cycling; children, both young and old will be able to test their skills at games in the Maison du Bois et du Jouet and you will discover the captivating story of the Cathars at the exhibition on Catharism at the Maison des Mémoires and in the medieval city of Hautpoul.

La Grande Maison is located in the centre of Mazamet, a short walk from most bars and restaurants.

There are good selection of bars and restaurants, a number of interesting shops, and all your provisions can be purchased from the local hypermarkets.

We are happy to drive you around the local area, a familiarity tour to help you find your bearing and to point out all the bars, restaurants, shops, services and points of interest.

About Mazamet

Surrounded by deciduous forests and lush valleys, Mazamet is on the edge of the Languedoc National Park – the southern most extension of the Massif Central (geologically the oldest part of France).

Mazamet is a market town with markets held weekly on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, with a smaller market also held on a Sunday. During the winter months, there are also specialist Fois Gras markets held in the town, generally on a Sunday morning. At Christmas time, a specially themed market under a superb tent takes shape in one of the town’s car parks – with lots of yummy treats to try, wines to taste (and buy), together with a wonderful selection of locally made items which make perfect Christmas gifts.

The town itself offers a variety of bars, shops and restaurants and is steeped in history from its days as Europe’s leader in tanning and the production of leather goods.

Superb buildings are scattered around the town, so it’s worthwhile putting on your walking shoes and meandering through the back streets – a wealth of architectural delights await you!

On the outskirts of Mazamet, you will find the large hypermarkets & supermarkets including L’Eclerc, Atac, Lidl and Aldi. There is also a good range of specialty leather shops in La Richarde on the outskirts of Mazamet (direction Beziers).

The Pic de Nore, the highest point of the Montagne Noire at 1210m is easily accessible by car from Mazamet - the rounded summit provides a fantastic panoramic vista and fabulous photo opportunities.
